The Tournament History

1997
From its very beginning the Golden Gate Tournament was launched as a nation-wide event in fencing. It was an outstanding achievement for all activists of this sport.

1998-1999
The Golden Gate Tournament reached the level of an international sports event, the participation in which had been a dream for many leading young fencers from CIC and foreign countries.

The major objective of the International Golden Gate Tournament was the promotion of fencing, increase in skills of young sportsmen, further development of the international partnership in fencing for young sportsmen and also the selection of the best fencers for the national team of Ukraine to take part in the World championship. All that had been, upon which the organizers of the Tournament focused their major efforts. And their achievements were greatly appreciated on the international level: in 2006 the International Golden Gate tournament became a part of the World Cup in Fencing.

The importance of the Tournament increased greatly though the contests multiplied their significance in the sports life of Ukraine each year. The International Golden Gate tournament became in our country the First event of the World Cup in women's sabre. In other words, Ukraine as a host country managed to take a significant place in World fencing classification.

Since then the sports base of the Central Sports club of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been compelling attention of sports observers, workers of mass media and just admirers of fencing from many countries, e.g., Russian Federation, Belarus, Poland, Kazakhstan, United States, Germany, Italy, Israel, etc.

Each year Kiev receives dozens of Tournament participants, i.e., famous sportsmen, sports analysts, members of the International Fencing Federation, professional sports reporters, coaches, admirers, etc. Among them there are many honourable persons that frequently visit international sports events.

Girls under 20 take part in such fencing contests. The first place winner of the Tournament receives two thousand US$ offered by one of the main sponsors of the contest the Avtologistics company. The total prize bounty amounts to five thousand US$.

Traditionally the Tournament sponsors are Avtologistics Company, the Ukrainian Fencing Federation, Taki spravy publishing house, Solomyanska building company, Ilta Company and Central sports club of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Tournament organizers are confident that the International Golden Gate Tournament will be for all young fencers also in the future the first step on their way of attaining new sports hights in Olympic Games and World contests. The more so, because today it became already a direct jumping-off place for new sports achievements.

Today, everyone who has something to do with this Tournament is overflowed with the pride in the acceptance of the word. The name of the Tournament symbolises the Golden Gate of Kiev as the direct way to success distinctly associated with the capital of Ukraine. Now, this visual metaphor is clear and understandable all over the world.
